The Greencards – Telluride, CO

The second of their Telluride shows, the Greencards’ main stage set included songs from their new album, Fascination (Chico Calling, Living on a Dream, The Avenue) as well as some older tunes (Patty Griffin’s What You Are).

Towards the end of their set, they invited Sam Bush to play a Bill Monroe tune with them, even though Kym, as a mandolin player jokingly admitted that playing with Sam would be intimidating.

The Greencards Fascination

If you wanted to give your sound a figurative face-lift, Jay Joyce is one of the producers you might call on for help, and wanting to make a record that was unlike anything they’d done before, The Greencards did just that.

Their fourth album, Fascination is still filled with mandolins, fiddles and soaring vocals but there’s a distinct difference in sound when compared with the more straight-forward bluegrass of their earlier records.

SXSW 2009 & other things to look forward to

03.17.2009 | No Comments »

It’s that time of year again and the music portion of SXSW kicks off tomorrow.

Even without a badge, there’s loads of free or nearly free shows to enjoy if you’re in Austin this week.  KGSR has shows at Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake, and the morning broadcast from the lobby of the Four Seasons.

Numerous artists are playing side shows around the city and there’s the annual Million Musician March for Peace on the 21st.

But, if you’re sitting out for this year’s festivities there’s still plenty to be excited about in the musical world.

Bonnie Raitt – Telluride Bluegrass Festival, CO

06.18.2006 | No Comments »

Bonnie came out about thirty minutes late because the band before her played late. She burst out on the stage, very energetic and she praised the previous band (Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Edgar Meyer, Tim O’Brien, Bryan Sutton) and said she couldn’t believe that she had to follow them. She said it was nice to be back and “You’ve had the bluegrass now we’ve got the blues! Let’s rock out!”

She started with Help Me Lord and did a cute little dance during the break and it was much slower than on the album. She admitted it was a little scary to be in Telluride but she was glad to be here.

She then said, “Now we’re gonna sing some songs from Souls Alike, this one’s from Souls Alike!” She did Two Lights In The Nighttime and added the best voice break to the first chorus, last ‘do’.
