With banjos, accordions, clarinets and even a gut-bucket bass in town, Canadian band Po’ Girl stopped by Momo’s Club Friday night as part of their “No Shame” tour.
Playing a sampling of new tunes from their upcoming record, “Follow Your Bliss” (due out in May) as well as some “oldies” the four-piece band with Allison Russell, Awna Teixeira, Benny Slidelinger (guitars) and Mikey “Lightning” August (drums) charmed the audience with their blend of folk, roots and originality.

Canadian folk group Po’ Girl will be touring February and March to raise money to benefit two child abuse prevention organizations, the National Children’s Alliance in the USA and Little Warriors in Canada.

Like a good gumbo, Po’ Girl’s music blends genres and styles and lets them simmer to perfection. The current line-up of Allison Russell and Awna Teixeira with luthier Benny Sidelinger spent the summer of ‘08 at Austin’s Screen Door Studios recording their upcoming release, Deer in the Night.
Complementing the band’s core musicians who play everything from the banjo to the accordion to the gut bucket bass the album features appearances from nearly a dozen guests, mostly on various percussion parts.

Playing the first of three Colorado dates at Avogadro’s Number in Fort Collins, Po’ Girl proved they are not only ridiculously talented musicians but that they know how to put on a great show.
Comprised of Awna Teixeira, Allison Russel, Benny Sidelinger and J.J. Jones, Po’ Girl took the stage after Harbor Collective played an opening set.

Their fifth album, Deer in the Night, is set for release next month sometime later this year and they’re hitting the road for a series of shows in Colorado, Utah, Arizona and New Mexico starting April 9th in Fort Collins.

It’s that time of year again and the music portion of SXSW kicks off tomorrow.
Even without a badge, there’s loads of free or nearly free shows to enjoy if you’re in Austin this week. KGSR has shows at Auditorium Shores on Lady Bird Lake, and the morning broadcast from the lobby of the Four Seasons.
Numerous artists are playing side shows around the city and there’s the annual Million Musician March for Peace on the 21st.
But, if you’re sitting out for this year’s festivities there’s still plenty to be excited about in the musical world.
