10 Questions: Angie Stevens

Angie Stevens

Voted Denver’s best singer-songwriter by Westword, Angie Stevens and her band The Beautiful Wreck have been taking their show on the road and promoting their latest album, Queen of this Mess.

They’ll be continuing their travels with Jen Korte & the Loss in October and Roger Clyne & the Peacemakers later this year but first they’ll be making a stop at Swallow Hill’s Daniels Hall for a show with David Berkeley and Catherine MacLellan and some special surprise guests.

Recently, Angie took some time to share with us her thoughts on the new record, songwriting and the local music scene.

Coles Whalen

Singer-songwriter Coles Whalen is planning a big homecoming: a show at Denver’s Soiled Dove to celebrate the release of her latest record, Whistle Stop Road on October 1.

She took some time to speak with us while she and her band were in Seattle, between visiting Pikes Place Market and a local music store, where she picked up a vintage kazoo (“I’ve never heard anything that sounds like it, it’s really amazing,” she laughed. “I just might have to pull that out at a show.”)

Daniel Johnston – “Is And Always Was”

09.29.2009 | 1 Comment »

Daniel Johnston has ridden the fine line between genius and insanity his entire career and he’s become a sensation in the indie music world with his off-beat style and tale that reads like something from a comic book, casting him as the unlikely hero.

His music is traditionally rough, sometimes simply created on his home tape recorder and dubbed as needed. Even with the clear brilliance of his lyrics, the recording style can make his work slightly inaccessible to a larger population. Enter Is and Always Was, Daniel’s latest album – produced by Jason Falkner (Beck, Air, Paul McCartney).

Legendary singer-songwriter Guy Clark released his latest album Somedays The Song Writes You earlier this week.

He took some time to speak with us from his home in Nashville before the record hit store shelves and answered our questions about his songwriting, guitars and making the album.

Bonnie Raitt & Taj Mahal – Blues & Brews Festival, CO

09.24.2009 | No Comments »

Mother Nature revved up her pitching arm and treated the the audience to rain, hail and a few tiny snowflakes while Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal and their respective bands rocked on through the weather during their Sunday night closing set at the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival.

While their repertoire hasn’t changed much on the BonTaj Roulet tour, they certainly brought their best to the stage on Sunday night, even with the high altitude (“Walking up a hill and thinking you’re in shape is different from singing,” Bonnie laughed).

Ruthie Foster – Blues & Brews, CO

Representing Austin, Texas, the truly phenomenal Ruthie Foster rejoiced in combining gospel, reggae and the blues during one of the few hours of sunshine at the Telluride Blues and Brews festival.

She opened with the Sister Rosetta Tharpe tune, Up Above My Head before throwing a little Lucinda Williams into the mix with Fruits of My Labor.

Carolyn Wonderland – Blues & Brews, CO

09.18.2009 | No Comments »

Since it’s no secret how much we love Carolyn Wonderland, we were glad to see her opening the Blues and Brews Festival in Telluride. The early birds and those who came to stake out a place for their tent were treated to one of Austin’s finest singers and guitar players.

Joking about the rush to get lawn space, she said, “I wouldn’t have believed it if I hadn’t seen it with my own two eyes.”

With Cole El-Saleh on keyboards and Michael “Lefty” Lefkowitz on drums (“without whom I’d be just a boring folky”) she played songs from her latest album Miss Understood such as A Long Way To Go, Misunderstood and a song she “stole from Ms. Terri Hendrix,” I Found The Lions.
