The death of KCUV

KCUV FM Logo

A few years ago, Emmylou Harris declared KCUV one of the greatest radio stations in existence. And it was.

This was back when it was 1510 on the AM dial in Denver.

The early posters promoting the station bragged about playing everyone from Asleep at the Wheel and Los Lobos to the Subdudes and Doc Watson.

Since then, it made the jump to 102.3 FM and in the transition lost a little of its funky spirit.

Mainstream pop started to collect in the playlist like spider webs in an abandoned house.

Richard Thompson

It was another wet festival, but the 9th annual Thirsty Ear Festival at Eaves Movie Ranch in Santa Fe, New Mexico was full of great music and good times.

With both headlining acts like Richard Thompson, Patty Griffin and Buckwheat Zydeco and local bands playing in the saloon the Old West town was rocking for three days.

Listen to: Daniel Johnston

Hi How Are You

Upon first listen, Daniel Johnston appears to be crazy. Or brilliant. Or perhaps both.

Either way, there’s something in his sound that catches your attention.

And he’s the epitome of indie music, his earliest recordings were passed around on cassette tapes that he would re-record as he needed more.

Brandi Carlile – Chautauqua Auditorium, CO

Brandi Carlile

One of the few sold-out shows that the Denver area has seen this summer, Brandi Carlile’s show at Boulder’s Chautauqua Auditorium was packed.

Instead of opening, like she did for Sheryl Crow earlier in the season, Brandi brought her band for a full-length show and handed opening duties to local artist Gregory Alan Isakov.

She joined Gregory on a song during his set, and then after a short intermission started her show with a cello solo.

Big Sweet Life Cover

It’s been almost four years since this album hit the shelves and you’ve still probably never heard of it.

It’s not a cause that catches national headlines like FarmAid does, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy.

With interpretations of Jon Dee’s songs by some of Austin’s finest musicians, Big Sweet Life is a community effort to help raise money for Willie Graham, Jon Dee’s son.

Patty Griffin – Belly Up, CO

It rained, snowed and the sun shined. All in one day. But that’s Colorado weather for you.

By the time we all arrived in Aspen for round two of the Slightly-Less-Epic Patty Adventure it was clear skies.

Playing at the Belly Up Tavern gave her the time to play a much longer set than last night at the Folks Fest and tell many more stories and the more intimate venue made it easy to pretend that it was your own private concert.

Patty Griffin – Rocky Mountain Folks Fest, CO

It was a wet day to be a Festivarian.

A very wet, very cold and very muddy day.

After nearly three months with hardly any rain, the skies opened up and a downpour ensued. It’s still raining now.

But, the dedicated donned rain suits and tarps and trekked to the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons, CO to see the first day of the three-day folks festival. The second to last act of the night was Patty Griffin.

Round two of the Carolyn Wonderland Adventure. She played her last Colorado date at Boulder’s Fox Theater on Monday night.

Even with the sparse audience, the band which also includes Cole El-Saleh (keyboards) and Michael “Lefty” Lefkowitz (drums) played an hour and a half set including some old favorites and a few new tunes as well.
