“This is my probation officer, Dennis,” Danielle joked nodding towards her bassist before asking the audience. “If I were charged with a crime based on looks alone, what would it be?”
Pausing between her folky, ukulele songs to crack jokes and look for feathered headdresses in the crowd. “Miley Cyrus is sabotaging my music career,” she said after Another Day. “Because I’m her one and only competition… but I actually kind of like her.”
She also played her “groovy, groovy, jazzy, funky but not really,” bluegrass inspired Gone and did a cover of Hall & Oates’ Rich Girl (“I think it’s really lame, but you guys like it,” she said).

Playing his first main stage set at the 3rd annual Monolith Festival, Colorado’s own Gregory Alan Isakov and his band The Freight’s half-hour set included mostly songs from his new album, This Empty Northern Hemisphere (it will be released on vinyl Oct. 17 at the Bluebird Theater, it’s already out on CD.)
Highlights: Big Black Car, Moon Song (which he played last night at Chautauqua Auditorium with Brandi Carlile) and Light Year.

Returning to Colorado and Boulder’s Chautauqua Auditorium with a full band (including Allison Miller, drums, Josh Neumann, cello, and the twins, Phil and Tim Hanseroth, bass and guitar), Brandi Carlile played to a sold-out crowd.
The second show of their “Give Up The Ghost” tour, preparing fans for the upcoming record of the same name (out Oct. 6) they played an amazing hour and a half set, incorporating new material in with some older favorites.
Opening the show was the North Carolina band, Noises 10, sharing songs from their album The Hammer, The Anvil, The Stirrup. Brandi (who is always willing to lend a musical hand) came out and added background vocals on a song called My Repair.

Amy Speace is our latest musical addiction and her latest album “The Killer In Me” is a habit-forming combination of eloquent songwriting and Amy’s passionate voice.
The New York-based artist started her career in theater, making the jump to music first as half of Edith O. Speace and later set out on her own with the independently-released Fable.
Within the record are a dozen songs of love, loss and redemption most of which were written in a secluded cabin in the Catskills.

A local Boulder favorite, it’s hard to imagine how the incredibly talented Gregory Alan Isakov has managed to stay somewhat “under the radar.” The music he creates is haunting and folky with a magical modern twist.
With his band, The Freight, he’s made four albums including This Empty Northern Hemisphere, released earlier this year.
He’ll be playing a main stage set at the Monolith Festival at Red Rocks next Saturday (Sept. 12) before hitting the road with Ani Difranco but he was able to take a few minutes to talk with us about his music, inspirations and fishing with Brandi Carlile.

Another of the last of the summer music festivals, Telluride’s Blues & Brews is just around the bend (Sept. 18-20). This year’s festival offers over 20 artists and 50 microbreweries.
And with the beautiful mountains setting the perfect backdrop for the stage it’s even listed in the book 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die.
