Countdown to the Americana Music Association Awards

This year, the Americana Music Association could simply give every nominee an award. We imagine that would be easier than debating the merits of each of the albums, artists and songs on their list.

And we’re not about to try and guess the winners — we’ll stay in suspense until the ceremony, September 9 at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville.

It’s festival season again… the Austin City Limits line-up was finally released after weeks of guessing and speculating and full-schedules are rolling in left and right. Rally to Save the Cactus Café

As the battle to rescue the much-loved and renowned Cactus Café from budget cuts by the University of Texas wages on, the Friends of the Cactus Café and SavetheCactusCafe.org held a rally on the steps of the UT Tower gathering signatures and continuing to raise awareness.

Local musicians Sara Hickman, Bill Oliver, David Garza, Elizabeth Wills, Richard Bowden and Barbara K. performed alongside speakers State Rep. Elliot Naishtat and City Council member Laura Morrison reminding the community that the Cactus Café is a vital and historical venue that should be preserved.

Po’ Girl’s “No Shame” Tour

Grounded in Music’s new studio

As music programs disappear from public education, Grounded in Music helps provide children from the Boys and Girls Club with the opportunity to discover their musical passion and develop their skills.

At the newly opened studio in South Austin, where kids have access to state-of-the-art tools like a “super-charged” Mac Pro with recording software and a comprehensive curriculum on the ins and outs of the industry, board member and headliner at this year’s GIM benefit concert Patty Griffin answered a few quick questions.

Countdown to Telluride’s Brews & Blues Festival

Carolyn Wonderland will open this year’s festivities.

Another of the last of the summer music festivals, Telluride’s Blues & Brews is just around the bend (Sept. 18-20). This year’s festival offers over 20 artists and 50 microbreweries.

And with the beautiful mountains setting the perfect backdrop for the stage it’s even listed in the book 1,000 Places to See in the USA and Canada Before You Die.

Looking forward to Monolith Festival 2009

Among the last of the summer festivals, the 3rd annual Monolith Festival promises great music (over 50 artists spanning nearly every genre) and fabulous atmosphere (the famously amazing Red Rocks Amphitheater).

Headlining the show are The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Saturday) and The Mars Volta (Sunday) but the entire line-up is incredibly strong and with five stages there’s something for everyone.
