As the battle to rescue the much-loved and renowned Cactus Café from budget cuts by the University of Texas wages on, the Friends of the Cactus Café and SavetheCactusCafe.org held a rally on the steps of the UT Tower gathering signatures and continuing to raise awareness.
Local musicians Sara Hickman, Bill Oliver, David Garza, Elizabeth Wills, Richard Bowden and Barbara K. performed alongside speakers State Rep. Elliot Naishtat and City Council member Laura Morrison reminding the community that the Cactus Café is a vital and historical venue that should be preserved.

Among the last of the summer festivals, the 3rd annual Monolith Festival promises great music (over 50 artists spanning nearly every genre) and fabulous atmosphere (the famously amazing Red Rocks Amphitheater).
Headlining the show are The Yeah Yeah Yeahs (Saturday) and The Mars Volta (Sunday) but the entire line-up is incredibly strong and with five stages there’s something for everyone.

Patty Griffin @ Folks Fest 2008
Nineteen years ago, the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival, younger sibling of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival, began annual festivities in Estes Park.
Moving down the canyon to the Planet Bluegrass Ranch in Lyons, Colo. in 1995, Folks Fest brings together artist from varying folk traditions – bluegrass, blues, and contemporary included.
The lineup for this year’s musical reunion (Aug. 14-16) has a little old (Don McLean, Susan Tedeschi), a little new (Mia Dyson, Chuck E. Costa) and the usual suspects (Gillian Welch, Rufus Wainwright, Mary Gauthier).

Nominations for the 8th Annual Americana Awards were announced last week and Buddy Miller seems to be the hands-down darling this year with a nomination in every category besides the “new & emerging artist.”
The award show, scheduled on Sept. 17 will be hosted by Jim Lauderdale and will feature a band led by, who else, Buddy Miller.
