Gregory Alan Isakov

A local Boulder favorite, it’s hard to imagine how the incredibly talented Gregory Alan Isakov has managed to stay somewhat “under the radar.” The music he creates is haunting and folky with a magical modern twist.

With his band, The Freight, he’s made four albums including This Empty Northern Hemisphere, released earlier this year.

He’ll be playing a main stage set at the Monolith Festival at Red Rocks next Saturday (Sept. 12) before hitting the road with Ani Difranco but he was able to take a few minutes to talk with us about his music, inspirations and fishing with Brandi Carlile.

Dave Alvin and the Guilty Women

After various projects (The Blasters, The Knitters, The Guilty Men) Dave Alvin has a new band, the Guilty Women.

The 8-piece group (Dave plus Cindy Cashdollar, Nina Gerber, Laurie Lewis, Christy McWilson, Sarah Brown, Amy Farris and Lisa Pankratz) formed for a one-off show at the Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival last year. Their set was so well received, they went on to record an album, which they are touring to support.

Dave took some time last week to answer a couple quick questions with a “couple long answers” about his different musical ventures, the first time he heard himself on the radio (it was here in Colorado) and what people should expect at the shows.

Terri Hendrix

Texas singer-songwriter Terri Hendrix does things her own way. She started her own label, has a goat for a mascot (she once milked goats in exchange for guitar lessons) and abandoned an opera scholarship to pursue her own musical path.

A decade or so after her debut album, she’s released 10 other records, played nearly every folk festival imaginable and hosts “Life’s A Song,” a yearly workshop with Lloyd Maines.

Last week, from the main office of Wilory Records, she took some time to answer our questions.

10 Questions: Sarah Jarosz

With her debut record, Song Up In Her Head, on shelves for just over a month and just days before her first main set at Colorado’s RockyGrass Festival, Sarah Jarosz is keeping herself busy.

And that’s not taking into account the 18-year-old’s preparations for her freshman year of college this fall.

Last week she took a few minutes to answer some questions about the juggling act, her favorite places to get coffee and the new album.

Paper Bird: Soaring high and joyfully

Left to Right: Sarah Anderson, Esmé Patterson, Genny Patterson, Tyler Archuletta, Caleb Summeril, Paul DeHaven and Macon Terry

There’s not a genre into which Paper Bird fits neatly, they’re a little Americana-folk with a touch of bluegrass combined with a hint of Motown and something that belongs to the era of speakeasies and flapper dresses. The title of their first album, Anything Nameless and Joymaking describes their sound perfectly.
