After what seems like forever, the 36th Annual Telluride Bluegrass Festival is only a month away. And we’re so excited we can hardly stand it.
Honestly, we turn into giddy little children every time we think about it.
And why are we jumping up and down? It has a lot to do with the fact that there’s just nothing quite like the atmosphere in Telluride’s Town Park during the four days of the bluegrass festival.

A few years ago, Emmylou Harris declared KCUV one of the greatest radio stations in existence. And it was.
This was back when it was 1510 on the AM dial in Denver.
The early posters promoting the station bragged about playing everyone from Asleep at the Wheel and Los Lobos to the Subdudes and Doc Watson.
Since then, it made the jump to 102.3 FM and in the transition lost a little of its funky spirit.
Mainstream pop started to collect in the playlist like spider webs in an abandoned house.

When does an artist “sellout”?

Tom Petty
at the Vegoose Music Festival, 2006
Is it when they first play an arena, or when they try to re-create their last top single?
Did Dylan sellout when he plugged in, when he appeared in a Victoria’s Secret ad or when he released an album through Starbucks?
Does that fact that Cher actually stopped touring (she’s back out on tour, dang it Cher!) after her “farewell” concert make her less of a sellout than the Eagles with their multiple farewell attempts and exclusive deal with Walmart?
If Robert Johnson sold his soul for his guitar skills, are today’s musicians dealing with the devil or are they simply making good business decisions?

There is a plague afflicting the music industry.
The symptoms include an overwhelming need to release an album in as many different variations as possible.
He with the most adjectives at the end of the title apparently wins some sort of prize.
Instead of the regular grouping of tracks, album cover and some liner notes there’s an extended super-deluxe version somewhere or a USB-stick that gives the buyer super-exclusive access to top secret, from the bottom of the vault, we’d tell you what it is but we’d have to kill you material.
Without vinyl singles, artists need some way to get their babies that didn’t make the 12 song cut out to the people. With illegal downloading (which is not a new concept, just a new method) the record companies need another way to line their pockets.
Whichever way you look at it, it’s the most dedicated fans that are getting the short end of the deal as we end up buying multiple copies of the same album.

It’s incredible how many awards are actually handed out at the Grammys and there’s always one artist that seems to get overlooked. Then there are the years where a sweep jump starts someone’s career and leads to years and years of great music… look at Bonnie Raitt.
Everybody has their own opinion but if I were picking some of this years winners, these are who I’d choose to take home an award on February 10.
