On the first night of showcases kicking off SXSW 2011, The Tap Room at Six was brimming with fabulous toe-tapping music from Shelley King and The Lost Bayou Ramblers.
King, who held the title of “Texas State Musician 2008,” and her band with Marvin Dykhuis, Sarah Brown, Perry Drake and Chip Dolan provided some local flavor with “Who Needs Tears” and the ballad, “It’s Starting to Rain.”
The New Orleans subdudes influence on songs from her latest record, Welcome Home, was evident on “I Remember,” “Summer Wine” and the gospel-esque title track.
Grammy-nominated Cajun swing band, The Lost Bayou Ramblers, continued to keep the crowd dancing to traditional waltzes and two-steps with tunes from their upcoming record.
Their predominately French lyrics were continuously interpreted as instructions to keep moving and spinning across the floor. The Lost Bayou Ramblers will be back in Austin at the Continental Club in May.
