Ryan Bingham – Austin City Limits Festival 2011, TX

Ryan Bingham

Still riding the well-deserved success of recent projects Junky Star and Crazy Heart, West-Texas-raised Ryan Bingham and his band, The Dead Horses, folk-rocked the crowd at his ACL performance with hard-hitting lyrics (“Dollar A Day,” “Depression,” “Hard Times”) that sound as if he borrowed a ’30s era troubadour’s notebook.

And with a crowd filled with twenty-somethings the themes of depression (economical and personal), job loss and drought are no longer irrelevant throwbacks of folk songs.

On a side note, a nice addition to the Dead Horses for the ACL show was Austin-based fiddler (but fellow West Texan), Richard Bowden.
