The Hippie Dream Concert — Woodstock Veteran Carlos Santana and current favorite Michael Franti — played Austin’s ACL Live at Moody Theater on Monday September 12 for the first of a two-night stand.

Michael Franti and Spearhead opened the showed and quickly proved their ability to spread enthusiasm throughout the crowd. During his set Franti performed on stage, on the concert floor, and on each of the venue’s balconies.

Taking a nod towards his unique guitar, Franti explained that he was playing acoustic in hopes of garnering a spot on the Austin City Limits television program that is recorded at the theater.

The Santana Band’s set exploded with an extended drum intro that morphed into a cover of AC/DC’s “Back in Black.”

Santana then proceed to play well into the night performing almost all of his huge hits — “Black Magic Woman,” “Oye Como Va,” “Evil Ways,” “Smooth” and “Maria Maria” — as well as covers of Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane and Cream.

Noting the location of the concert, Santana waved his hand across the cavernous room and commented that, “This is the House that Stevie Ray Vaughan built.” Adding to the SRV tribute, Santana was joined onstage by Vaughan’s Double Trouble drummer Chris Layton.
