Joined by Nederland’s own Great American Taxi (who also opened the show), Todd Snider returned to the Boulder Theater stage with songs from his two latest records, The Excitement Plan and Peace Queer.
“I’ve been driving around this country for 15 years or more, etcetera, etcetera, most of you have heard this shit before,” Todd said starting his standard self-introduction. “I might share some of my opinions with you but not because they’re smart but because they rhyme, etcetera, etcetera… I feel like I’ve been coming here long enough that I can be honest with you and the matter of fact, if things go well, we will provide for you a 90 minute distraction from your impending doom and if things go particularly well, you’ll provide us with the same thing.”
He included several choice crowd favorites like Looking For A Job, Conservative, Christian, Right Wing, Republican, Straight, White American Males and Devil’s Backbone Tavern while still opening up the set list to the audience asking “does anybody have anything they were hoping to heard if they drove all the way out here?”
Though usually a talkative performer, the only extended story he told was about being robbed at an East Nashville car wash by a guy named Tony Bennet (which he promised if “you’re nice to us and boogie-woogie on down… and only if you free your mind and let your ass follow,”) opting instead to squeeze in as much music as possible. Partially (because an Elvis song is not an uncommon occurrence) in commemoration of Elvis Presley’s birthday, Todd’s buddy and King impersonator, Elvis Hicks sang Hound Dog.
And catering to the Boulder jam-band centric crowd, whenever possible Todd name-dropped groups like Yonder Mountain String Band and Widespread Panic and covered the Grateful Dead’s I Need A Miracle and the Taxi’s Good Night To Boogie (on their upcoming record Reckless Habits) as a closing song.
