On the first of two nights at the Continental Club, Those Darlins (Nikki, Kelley and Jessi) started the weekend with rowdy, shamelessly twangy rock’n'roll.
They’ve got a streak of innocence running through their rendition of the A.P. Carter classic “Cannonball Blues” and Jessi Darlin’s doe-eyed, Nanci Griffith-esque (well, if she had gone through a teenage, Joan Jett punk phase) vocals that balanced nicely with the drinking antics and warnings in “DUI or Die” and the funky novelty of “The Whole Damn Thing.”
Between tune banter highlights included Nikki offering the first few lines of Ray Wylie Hubbard’s “Snake Farm” as a new favorite song, Kelley thanking the pre-gaming audience members and the various, though unnecessary, invitations to dance extended throughout the set.
