Pinetop Perkins had to celebrate his birthday a little early this year. That’s because on his 97th birthday (July 7) the illustrious Mississippi bluesman will be performing at a festival in Spain. He’s still touring, still rockin’ the keys and still creating new music.
In a bright blue suit and matching shoes, Pinetop took the stage for the umpteenth time. Though he’s walking a little slower, once he sat down at the piano age became truly just a number. In the short set he boogied through classics such as “Got My Mojo Working,” making sure the crowd joined in on the chorus.
Making the show a multi-generational affair, friend and fellow blues pianist Marcia Ball played an opening set, as did the Peterson Brothers—two talented teens (11 and 13) from Bastrop, Texas—who also ended the evening by presenting Mr. Perkins with his birthday cake.
