A decade ago, singer-songwriters Sam Brooker and Ruby Amanfu met at a Nashville writer’s night. The resulting friendship and frequent on-stage collaboration has finally let to their debut album, The Here & The Now.
Fusing Americana sounds with R&B soul and pop sensibilities along with styles that they each learned from their formative years (Sam was raised in Green Bay, Ruby in Ghana and Tennessee) their songs are uplifting and exuberant testimonies of life and love.
What Do I Do Now opens the record with an intoxicating beat and beautiful, intertwining vocals.
Can’t Stop Loving You utilizes an electronic percussion track and a spoken segment while Suitcase Song uses luggage as a metaphor for a relationship.
The Grammy-nominated spiritual Heaven’s My Home, featured in “The Secret Life of Bees,” has also been recorded by The Duhks. This I Know and More are from opposite ends of the love-song spectrum.
Their CD release party on Aug. 9 at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville and they’ll be playing several shows in Tennessee, Georgia, the Carolinas and Florida through October.
