Lyle Lovett – “Natural Forces”

Lyle Lovett Natural Forces

After two decades, Lyle Lovett knows what he does best: crooning ballads and tossing in the occasional quirky song.

On his latest, Natural Forces, he does both with the level of professionalism and charm you’d expect from the seasoned artist.

There are the longing ballads (Bayou Song), bluesy shuffles (Bohemia) and a few string-driven melodies.

He highlights several fellow Texan songwriters such as Eric Taylor (Whooping Crane) and Robert Earl King (the decidedly jaded It’s Rock and Roll).

There’s also Loretta, Townes Van Zandt’s classic ode to his barroom girl and Empty Blue Shoes which Lyle delivers with heartbreaking truth.

Both Farmer Brown/Chicken Reel and Pantry fall into that slightly wacky category and translate better onstage than in the studio. The later appears twice, the acoustic version tacked on as a closing track.

Recorded with his Large band, Natural Forces is a decent album but it could use a few more originals and perhaps a “step outside this house.”
