It seems that with the music industry whining about internet downloads (come on, it’s not like music sharing is new) they’ve forgotten to actually do business. Labels are going out of business and artists are left with notebooks of homeless songs.
Jill Sobule has taken a new approach – a fan funded record.
The idea is “a sort of patronage thing, where you guys are the Medici family, except I give you prizes for donations of certain amounts,” according to the website set up for the purpose.
Prizes range from a download of the finished album to credit in the liner notes all the way up to private concerts and guest spot on one of the tracks. So far, she’s raised o ver $51,000.
