Shawn Colvin – Chautauqua Auditorium, CO

With Nina Storey opening, Shawn Colvin returned to Boulder to play a set at Chautauqua Auditorium before embarking on a rafting trip down the Colorado River.

She came out and said, “Here we are again, I guess you can hear me. Don’t get too excited (strummed her guitar) Way too much of that. Well you gotta turn that guitar down on the monitor if you can cause it’s real loud. Or at least give me some voice! It’s so loud!” She laughed and said, “We’ll rock out.”

She said, “Thank you very much.”

She said that it was “just one of the great places to play. You always feel like a rock star and how about Nina? That was some singing. This is a little song inspired by my birthplace, South Dakota.” She added that it didn’t take place in South Dakota, but Kansas which was “close enough,” and that it was the “obligatory song writers song that must be written about how you wanna get out of your town, only if to say that it made you everything.”

She tuned more and cursed, “Damn!” at her guitar and then said “I like a loophole. That’s what made parenting so hard…” She said she was “raising the stakes” by going rafting and that “you can’t get out, there are no loopholes… well you have to be dying… fatigue does not qualify as an emergency (according to the brochure)” but that it was something she always wanted to do and she was taking her kid and “we’re going! If it kills us!”

She kept tuning, saying “you can blame the altitude, that’s always handy.” She said, “you know the story about how Sting told me to get a tuner… times like these I think he was right.” She kept tuning so she kept talking, saying that it was a “point of pride” for her to be up there with one guitar and “trying to make it work without all the miscellaneous junk.”

But she came off stage after opening for him and he said something to the effect of, “they make electric tuners” and she said, “You’re a pansy-ass (?). Did Sid and Nancy have tuners, did Bob Dylan have a tuner? Get it real, get back to the garden.” Then she said, “I didn’t say any of those things, I said, ‘You’re right Mr. Sting.”

She said, “Thank you, to the best hall, the best audience and the best sound. Never go away!”

For the encore, she came out and said “This is a song that was recently recorded by someone else and it’s now the music for Ralph Lauren’s ad but I’m not gonna let that stop me.”
