John Hiatt – Chautauqua Auditorium, CO

On tour this summer with the Ageless Beauties, John Hiatt played Chautauqua after Joan Osborne.

The third of five Colorado dates this September he played a decent mix of new songs from his latest record, Same Old Man and old favorites.

“How’re y’all doing?”

Perfectly Good Guitar

“Thank you! Don’t you smash those guitars. Thanks a million, folks. We’re gonna play a couple new songs. This is one from this new little CD we’ve got out.”

Old Days

“This is a another love song for the wild women.”

On With You

“Yes, I really want to go on with you, get on that train. We’ll do one more new one from the new little CD. This is a song about a gal that likes to give second chances. Thank God for that is all I can say about that.”

Love You Again

“Another little love song, this was recorded back in 1995 which doesn’t seem that long ago unless you start thinking about it in terms of your kids.”

Cry Love

“Let me introduce you to the Ageless Beauties if I could. On the bass guitar please welcome from Fairview, Tennessee, Mr. Patrick O’Hearn. Back on the drum kit from Lake Charles, Louisiana please welcome Kenneth Blevins. On all kinds of stringed instruments from Nashville, Tennessee, born and raised, Mr. Doug Lancio!”

John and Joan

“It’d be my extreme pleasure to ask Ms. Joan Osborne if she’d come out and sing a song with us.”

The Way We Make A Broken Heart

“Joan Osborne, I love her, shes wonderful. I’m a little verklempt.”

Master of Disaster

“Thank you so much, well here’s what we’re gonna do, first I’m gonna get this capo on right here, then we’re gonna do a song on a record I put out in 2000.”

Crossing Muddy Waters

“We’re just talking amongst ourselves up here, changing things around. This is a song about moving, going from one place to another, we like to do that, us Americans.”

Drive South

“We got to have that alternative fuel so we can continue to drive south, we got to have it we got to move dammit! Let me just throw out a little quickie idea, we got to lighten up the mass of the vehicle then it’ll go farther, cheaper. That’s just one idea. I’m building a special Cadillac that weighs abut 350 pounds and get 475 miles to the gallon, so it can be done, i mean I’m doing it in my backyard. It’s not brain surgery its just not. What did I just say? Oh yeah! Talking about road trips you know I used to think the longest distance known to man was the distance between the head and the heart and i believe it but I’ve come to find that the longest distance known to man is the distance between Nashville and Memphis, Tennessee. It’s the longest 200 miles you’ll ever drive!”

Memphis in the Meantime
during which he sang, “I don’t think Kenny Chesney will ever record this song… Faith Hill maybe

“See if you like this one.”

Real Fine Love

“You’ve been wonderful. Time flies when you’re having fun, I’ll tell you that. Here’s a song well gee, it’s been about 20 years ago, or something. I’ll tell you a fun story, I was out touring and my wife came out to meet me in Chicago and she came into the lobby of the hotel, I had been on tour 8 months, and we had a new baby, Georgia Rae, who is now 21 and she came into the lobby and right there in front of God and everybody she said, ‘If you think I’m raising these fucking kids by myself, you’re out of your mind!’ So, believe me, changes were made.”

Slow Turning

“Once again on the bass guitar Patrick O’Hearn, on drum kits Mr. Kenneth Blevins and on all stringed things, Mr. Doug Lancio. Don’t you know we’re riding with the king.”

Riding with the King

Have a Little Faith

“You’ve all been wonderful, thank you so much. We love you, thank you. We take the music seriously, just not ourselves. Hope that’s alright with you.”
