Chan Marshall, aka Cat Power, released her second album of covers titled Jukebox today. From Joni Mitchell to Frank Sinatra, the variety of music she can make her own is impressive.
Accompanied by the Dirty Delta Blues, the 15 tracks on the deluxe version include remakes of her own material and one new song, Song to Bobby penned for Dylan in a beautiful, harmless yet obsessed fan type way. The iTunes pre-order included a remake of Could We as well.
The overall sound is reminiscent of The Greatest but at the same time there is less layering of sounds leaving each song feeling like a new tune with familiar lyrics instead of carbon-copy clones of the originals.
Closest to familiar recording is Chan’s take on She’s Got You. Available only on the deluxe album, she adds a more bluesy texture while paying homage to Patsy Cline.
This jukebox isn’t the one you’d find at any dance hall or honky-tonk, it plays the songs of a bar nearly empty except for the cigarette smoke and lonesome souls. Aretha, Sing One For Me and Naked, If I Want To stand out as the only two upbeat songs, just enough to keep the rest of the tracks from blurring together.
Don’t miss these tunes:
- She’s Got You
- Aretha, Sing One For Me
- Lost Someone
