What a hilarious gentleman. Lyle Lovett’s new release It’s Not Big, It’s Large (of course referring to his Large Band) makes me smile just thinking about it.
Guests like Sam Bush, Jerry Douglas, Bela Fleck and Guy Clark are everywhere, when you’re Lyle, you can get anyone to play on your album.
Of course, not to take away from his band which includes Russ Kunkel, Gene Elders and Mitch Watkins.
While it’s nothing new for Lyle and similar to previous albums it is still solid with a wonderful line-up, the instrumentation on the album is full and robust, and the layers of sounds throughout the album raise the bar for country-esque music. And really, the familiarity is welcome when listening to Lyle, like a good-fitting pair of boots or a comfy old chair.
Guy Clark intros on the seven minute epic South Texas Girl paints so many beautiful pictures that it should be enjoyed in a peaceful room with headphones and eyes shut.
All Downhill is one of the great quirky but still thought provoking Lyle songs with lyrics like “I’ve had an excellent time so far / There’s only one thing that I fear / I’ve been up so long on this lucky star / It could be all downhill from here.”
Funky beats and phrasing on Make It Happy and the bluegrass sounds (courtesy of Sam, Jerry and Bela) on both versions of Up In Indiana show the amazing variety and range that Lyle is capable of.
